There were a few attempts at rebellions (including by Vortigern's kids) but they failed. To fend off the Pictish and Irish invaders, Vortigern hired Saxon warriors, then got closer to the Saxons, and they gained a lot of power. His son, who took over was killed a few years into his reign and Vortigern took over. Given how much gamers like to quibble about minor details this is a pretty good idea. It starts with some recent history of the setting, which is a combination of historic fact and literature. The purpose of this chapter is to let you know what any starting character in the setting would.
